I think that my opinion of tattoos shouldn’t matter! It’s what YOU think that matters!

I’ve never been a fan of bodyart in excess. That is to say, I don’t like excessive or “in your face” piercings and tattoos on a person. I guess I’ve always felt that they should enhance your appearance, not become or take over your appearance.

With piercings, I don’t like anything too heavy on the face. Large, thick piercings don’t appeal to me (like flesh holes the size of a quarter). For the body, I don’t mind any kind of piercing, as it’s hideable, so seems more personal to me. I think some kinds of piercing become a “fashion” thing though (I remember a time when everyone wanted scaffold piercings…. and then got rid of them a year or two later!), and I’m not a fan of that.

Tattoos are a different matter. I think a LOT of people get tattoos to impress others, whether they realise it or not.  My tattoos have both been chosen to be in places where I can hide them, and both are designed specifically for me. While I look at some tattoos of logos or images from movies/games/books and think “Oh, cool”, I wouldn’t ever consider them for myself. Using someone elses creation as a tattoo just wouldn’t sit right for me. I think tattoos should be unique, just as the person wearing it is unique. I’m also not a huge fan of tribal tattoos (overdone, and tend not to be uniquely designed) or of chinese/japanese symbols (again, overdone, and generally not unique). While I do love some big tattoos, and have seen some AMAZING full chest and back ones, that might be because, again, they’re private and easy to hide. I’m not so keen on full sleeves or face tattoos.


BUT! These are just MY opinions on what I like in regards to tattoos and piercings. Everyone has their own view, and since it’s their body, they should do what they damn well like with it, even if myself or anyone else thinks it looks dumb. To people considering a tattoo or piercing, I urge you to consider these three things:

TATTOOS:
1. Is it unique? The last thing you want it to have “tattoo snap” with a stranger!

2. Imagine two people, one in their 30’s and one in the 60’s, with that same tattoo. How does it look? Do you think they’d regret it? If so, don’t do it. Alternatively, some good tattoo parlours do offer tattoos in semi-permanent ink, so you can live with your tattoo for a good few years, before deciding whether or not you want it forever.

3. If it’s based around a person (family, friend, whatever), will you ever live to regret it? Plenty of people have tattoos representing partners or friends on them, then hate them if they ever break up/fall out.

PIERCINGS:
1. Imagine your ideal job. Can you imagine them hiring someone with your piercings, if they’re visible? (This also applies to tattoos!)

2. Is it reversible? With small piercings, they almost always are. However, with some (such as punched flesh holes, or large flesh holes) they will never completely heal the way they used to be. Think long and hard about whether you’re okay with this.

3. Can the look you want be achieved in another way? For example, I like flesh spikes, but I do not want to stretch my ear piercings. So, I have fake spikes. They look just as good, but do not cause the lasting damage that stretching would cause to my ear.
